Overview

Visa overview The Working Holiday Scheme encourages cultural exchange and closer ties between arrangement countries by allowing young adults to have an extended holiday during which they may engage in short term work or study.

The program may enable students to obtain credit against further educational degree courses. The exchange program is normally a rotational program and will therefore expose the participant to different operational areas within their field. The participant will be expected to complete entry level tasks, but the program enables the participant to learn and understand more complex and supervisory aspects relating to their profession. It is expected that the program will help the participant to learn new skills to be used in future study, work based and training assignments.

Placement fields

Rotational placements within hotels and resorts may incorporate training in; housekeeping, kitchen; food and beverages, restaurant management, reception, facility management, hotel administration and marketing.

Rotational placements with business may incorporate training in; business organisation, design, planning, production, purchasing, sales, marketing, maintenance, stores and human resources.

Placement Locations

Placements are normally made in 3 to 5 star hotels, resorts and restaurants for both hotel and business placements. The companies are located throughout New Zealand.

Placement Duration

The visa is valid for 12 months, but you should check your specific working holiday scheme for differences.

Placement Particulars

Stipend The minimum rates that apply to starting-out workers, and employees on the training minimum wage (before tax), are:

  • $11.80 an hour; which is:
    • $94.40 for an 8-hour day or
    • $472.00 for a 40-hour week or
    • $944.00 for a 80-hour fortnight.

Accommodation and meals: The vast majority of placements offer live-in accommodation where participants are housed in staff housing or rooms within the hotel itself that offer all the standard facilities expected. Deduction for accommodation and meals per month would be approximately $600.00 per month. In some areas the cost of live-out accommodation is normally more.
National Insurance You are responsible for all your health costs while you are in New Zealand
Income Tax is payable every month at a rate of approximately 20% of the candidate’s salary.

The figures outlined above may be subject to charge.

Travel particulars

Airport Transfers from the nearest airport or train station are sometimes offers by host properties, but participants should calculate approximately $50.00-$100.00 cost.

Flights & Visas are payable by the participant.

Uniforms are not normally provided by the host property.

Program Eligibility

General

Partners and dependent children

If you have a partner and/or dependent children, they cannot be granted visas based on your WHS visa. They will need to apply in their own right by submitting a separate application.

To be eligible

You must:

  • be at least 18 and not more than 35 years old
  • not bring children with you
  • hold a return ticket, or sufficient funds to purchase such a ticket*
  • have a minimum of NZ$4,200 available funds to meet your living costs while you are here
  • meet our health and character requirements
  • hold medical and comprehensive hospitalisation insurance for the length of your stay
  • be coming to New Zealand to holiday, with work or study being secondary intentions for your visit
  • not have been approved a visa under a working holiday scheme before.

AND
If you are already in New Zealand, you must hold a valid temporary visa.

* You are required to hold sufficient funds for the duration of your visit and for the purchase of an outward ticket from New Zealand. Such evidence may be requested on arrival at the border.

Health requirements

You will need to meet our health requirements for temporary entry to New Zealand.
Our Working Holiday Schemes online system will tell you whether you need to send us a completed Medical and/or Chest X-ray Certificate. This is based on the maximum length of stay that you are allowed under your country"s working holiday scheme (not your intended stay), along with your responses to our health requirement questions.
You will receive full instructions on how to submit the certificate(s) in an automated email shortly after submitting your application. Depending on your scheme, the certificate must be received by Immigration New Zealand within 15 or 20 consecutive days from the date your application is submitted. The email will also advise you of this so it is important that you read it thoroughly.

Character requirements

You will need to meet our character requirements for temporary entry to New Zealand.
Nationality: Available schemes – you can check your specific requirements

Previous work experience: Preferred but not essential

English Language skills: The participant must have an understanding of the English language to at least intermediate level.

Other language skills: Participants must also detail knowledge and understanding of any other languages in their CV that may be of use to the host property.

Timeframe

Placement should normally be approved within 4 weeks from registration.

Work Permit not required

Visa should normally be secured within 4 weeks from work permit approval.

Safety Money / Emergency maintenance funds

We suggest that you hold $1,000.00 emergency funds at any given time.

Internship Verification

Your college or university may assign an internship verifier. The supervisor of your internship with is detailed on the training plan. Together you will be able to complete tasks in line with the program requirements.
